(Des Moines, IA) On October 24, 2010, Jiffy Lube’s NW 86th Street location in Clive, IA served as the host store for a Des Moines-based Jiffy Lube “Lube-a-Thon” to benefit Rock In Prevention (Rock), a nationally acclaimed youth prevention program, founded in Des Moines. A local priest who serves as Mercy’s Bishop Drumm Home chaplain, The Rev. Tom DeCarlo, was the grand prize winner of the Team Texas Performance Driving School, drawn from among the 163 car owners who took advantage of the Lube-A-Thon last weekend. Patrons received a Jiffy Lube Signature Service Oil Change which always includes exterior window washing, interior carpet vacuuming, as well as checking tire air pressure and fluids.
In just seven hours, Jiffy Lube and the Des Moines community raised $5,000. As a result, Rock, founded in Des Moines, will be able to provide its educational services to an estimated additional 500 schoolchildren. Rock can provide its services at a cost of about $10 per participant for its core program (ROCK LIVE) and for $16.62 for its expanded, lengthier curriculum-based program (ROCK PLUS).
“We were very proud to have the support of our vendors and employees,” says Aimee Carlson, Ord Enterprises, Jiffy Lube Owner Operator. “All the products and prizes for the day were donated, including the oil, filters and vehicle fluids, allowing all proceeds to go to Rock In Prevention. We acknowledge and thank our supporters who made this first annual Lube-a-Thon such a success.”
Pennzoil donated all the oil and also a golf package and a road safety kit as prizes; InstallerEDGE, gave away filters; SafetyKleen supplied car fluids and a tailgate prize package; ARAMARK Uniform Services provided t-shirts;QMI, supplied fuel system cleaning and a $100 gift card prize; and PolyDyn, donated an all-expenses paid trip to the Team Texas Performance Driving School, valued at $3,000. Additional prizes included 12 fuel system cleaning services from Jiffy Lube and 9 PolyDyn TX7 engine treatments.
Strategic America provided marketing while KGGO-AM radio station served as media sponsor.
Throttleitup provided additional marketing with emails to Jiffy Lube customers and others.
At the Lube-A-Thon, every customer received a gift bag with a free Jiffy Lube t-shirt, a Rock In Prevention CD and educational materials on the prevention program to help youth make healthy choices. There were prizes announced every 15 minutes with the grand prize, a trip for two to Team Texas Performance Driving School, drawn at 5 p.m., at the close of the event.
The event supported Rock In Prevention, a nonprofit organization founded in 1990 by Pat McManus, a national certified addictions counselor. Rock, through two programs – ROCK LIVE and ROCK PLUS – teaches kids to live alcohol, tobacco and drug-free lives and to their fullest potential through peer and classroom interaction and parental involvement. Rock has provided programming to more than 1.3 million people and is based on well-established research.
“Aimee Carlson’s leadership and commitment as a new Rock In Prevention Board member is exemplary,” says McManus, President of Rock In Prevention. “The event was exceptional in how smoothly it ran, with cars moving through like clockwork every three minutes. This is clearly a sign of excellent training and service. We thank Jiffy Lube on behalf of all the kids we serve.”
Carlson states, “Jiffy Lube is aware of the great work that Rock In Prevention does for children and families to help kids learn to live drug free and we couldn’t be happier to help such a great organization. We here at Jiffy Lube provide prevention, preservation and protection for owners of motor vehicles. Rock In Prevention is clearly a natural partnership for us in that it provides prevention of underage and illicit use of alcohol, tobacco and other drug use by children, as well as bully prevention. We also admire how it includes families in the program, here in central Iowa and beyond. We already look forward to next year’s Lube-A-Thon.”
