Count the Kicks

A major jump in Iowa’s live birth rate.

Challenge

Find a simple and memorable way to promote kick-counting during the third trimester to help expectant mothers understand more about their children’s well-being and increase healthy birth outcomes.

Solution

Catchy rhymes and Seuss-like illustrations authorized by the estate of Dr. Seuss, a more attractive and functional website that allows visitors make donations easily and heavy promotion of the Count the Kicks app through social media and media relations.

Impact

Since our initial campaign in 2009, Iowa’s stillbirth rate has dropped a dramatic 26 percent—giving the state the third lowest stillbirth rate in the nation. Around the world, thousands of expecting moms have downloaded the app. In Des Moines, unique fundraising opportunities, like the Every Woman Counts Annual Luncheon, have raised money to help educate families how to Count the Kicks.
