I don’t know why, but I love a list. I also love a gaucho pant (or is it coolots?), but I digress. There’s just something about a list that makes me feel like everything is going to be OK. If I feel overwhelmed with a lot of stuff that I have to do, I can make a list and my stress level will be cut in half almost immediately. If I can’t decide what shirt to wear, I’ll make a mental list of all the shirts I’ve worn in the last week and then pick out something not on that list. If a dingo took my baby, I’d make a list of all the places where dingos might store stolen babies. And so on.
Another thing I love is the summertime. With the exception of about ten days in late December, there’s no better time of year. Freshly-cut lawns, the sun staying out until 9:00pm, pools filled with mostly urine-free water – I love it all.
You’re not going to believe this, but that reminds me of one more thing I love (I think I just made a list, an accidentalist, if you will. You will, right?). I like me a good song. My favorite kind of song is a song that reminds me of the summer. Some might call this a “song of the summer.” The people doing that would be good at describing things in an accurate, succinct way. Bravo to them.
I found a list of 50 years of the songs of the summer over on Buzzfeed and it’s probably my favorite list ever for reasons we’ve already reviewed. Another fun find is this word cloud (as they say, the bigger the word in a word cloud, the more often times it was used) that includes every lyric from every song of the summer from 1980 through 2010.
At first glance, I’m most surprised by the inclusion of the word “alegria.” The internet says it’s a touring Cirque du Soleil show and also a restaurant on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. Additionally, it’s apparently a semi-popular word to use when singing about the only time of year where you should consider wearing a tubetop, but then ultimately choose not to.
Also, they’re saying “ella” is a word. Touche, Rihanna.
Here is the list of songs of the summer from just the last 13 years (I wanted to make sure Ricky Martin got in there. I feel like we owe him that). It’s a little Katy Perry-heavy, but those are the times we’re living in.
1999: “Livin’ La Vida Loca,” Ricky Martin
2000: “It’s Gonna Be Me,” ‘N Sync
2001: “Lady Marmalade,” Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, Mya, and Pink
2002: “Hot In Herre,” Nelly
2003: “Crazy In Love,” Beyoncé feat. Jay-Z
2004: “Yeah,” Usher
2005: “We Belong Together,” Mariah Carey
2006: “Promiscuous,” Nelly Furtado feat. Timbaland
2007: “Umbrella,” Rihanna feat. Jay-Z
2008: “I Kissed A Girl,” Katy Perry
2009: “I Gotta Feeling,” Black Eyed Peas
2010: “California Gurls,” Katy Perry feat. Snoop Dogg
2011: “Party Rock Anthem,” LMFAO
And finally, let’s bring this all back to advertising. BAM. This ad is more entertaining than it has any right to be.
