WHO: Strategic America: 30-year-old, Des Moines-based, integrated marketing agency, its employees, clients, central Iowa media and others with a passion for running and an interest in trying a new, revolutionary running technique. The running clinic is one of several major events taking place as SA celebrates its anniversary this week.
Jeff Cuddeback: Three-time Hawaii Ironman Winner and World Record Holder; 250+ triathlons; six-time veteran of the Hawaii Ironman; Four-time US National Champion and Triple Crown winner; 2003Triathlete Magazine Master Athlete of the Year. Even after a biking accident last year resulting in a broken back, Jeff competed in St. Croix 70.3 and took first place in the 50–54 age group, qualifying for Hawaii IM World Championships.
Eric Orton: One of the most recognized running coaches in the world, including to Christopher McDougall, author of the bestselling book Born To Run, Orton, former director of fitness for the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and USA Triathlon-certified coach and Sport Enhancement Specialist, has been featured in Men’s Health, Esquire, Men’s Journal and ESPN.
WHAT: Jeff Cuddeback and Eric Orton will team up to coach attendees on the newest, safest running methods for the long-term protection of the human body: Attendees will participate in strength training, and be introduced to uniquely devised equipment to assist with proper running on the forefoot versus traditional heel striking. Then, a 30-minute run will be held under the coaches’ guidance.
According to these running experts, many of today’s running shoes are harder on a runner’s body than minimal foot protection patterned after extensive studies of barefoot runners in Africa and elsewhere. Most modern running shoes force runners to use the heel when they run, called a heel strike, rather than the ball of the foot, called the forefoot. A Harvard University research study confirms the skeletal benefits of running shoeless.
Both men will be available to speak to the benefits of proper running as well as offer exclusive interviews on a new minimalist running training company they will launch soon with the support of Strategic America.
